Church History

Friendship Baptist Church was constituted in 1870. The church was located in an old house near Akins Mill Pond. The first church which the members built was a little log cabin. It was a small one room log cabin with one door and one window. It later served as a schoolhouse. The church was named by one of the first deacons, Phillip Morris, from his home church in South Carolina where he lived before moving to this area.

Eleven members were recorded in 1878. William Green Chester was the first pastor. Since 1878, the church has been a part of the local Baptist Association and the Ogeechee River Baptist Association which was so named in 1923. In 1886, Sunday School was organized and continues today. The first Bible school was in 1935.

Some other events of interest are as follows: Sunday School rooms were added in 1955; the Pastorium was built in 1959 and remodeled in 1979;  a new sanctuary was built in 1964 and changes made to it in 2005 and 2006; the fellowship hall was constructed in 1975 and remodeled in 2006;  in 2006 a Student Education building was added.

There were several pastors who served at Friendship Baptist over the past 130 years since its existence. They are as follows: W. M. Cowart, Z. Cowart, J.J. Miller, William Hursey, T.J. Cobb, W.D. Horton, A.F. Smith, C.A. Hart, W.J. Peacock, W.H. Evans, Roy C. Drawdy, Ernest Sain, Marvin Taylor, Bob E. Helton, LaVaughn Griffin, James W. Phillips, Mittry Taylor, Larry Ray, Dan E. Johnson, James Barnes, J.D. Turner and Tom Osborne. This list was furnished by the Mercer University Library records dating back to 1885.
